Current Research

Landscape change and stability in forest ecosystems.  Specialize in combining environmental remote sensing, statistics, and programming to map phenology variation, responses and potential landscape trajectories spanning the Conterminous US.

Research Interests

  • Developing landscape change metrics and maps: LanDAT
  • Environmental remote sensing and environmental data science
  • Multivariate statistical clustering
  • Spectral analysis
  • Geostatistics

Past Research

  • Monitoring to detect fugitive emission detection for oil and gas, and surface containment for CCS
  • Eddy covariance data analysis: Chequamegon Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (ChEAS)
  • Land-atmosphere CO2 modeling and data assimilation: CarbonTracker
  • Statistical downscaling for climate data: COMDAST

Why This Research is Important

Large and small-scale landowners appreciate the importance of healthy, productive, resilient forests and grasslands adjactent to their lands.  My work seeks to understand, at large scales, what makes landscapes resilient to change.  I seek to understand landscape tradeoffs between management practices, stability, and productivity of the land.  I pursue lines of that relate to the forest product industry, land conservation, and ecosystem services.
